Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine is most commonly understood to mean the use of herbs as a therapy to cure or prevent illness. Herbs are plants that can be used for medicinal and culinary purposes and also for some of their beautiful scents. The naturally occurring chemical substances that herbs contain can have quite a positive impact of the human body.

Not only are the leaves and flowers from the herb plants put to good use, so too are the stems, and even roots. Although science doesn’t exactly sing the praises of herbal medicine, it has long been used to treat minor and major conditions. In fact many traditional healing herbs and practices have been the basis for some of the most main stream of modern drugs today.

Herbs have been historically associated with almost every culture where they’ve provided an excellent source of food and medicine. This history has embedded itself in modern day Western Medicine where a great number of medicines include plant extracts in them or at the very least a ‘clone’ of certain plant properties discovered to have healing properties.

The infamous opium poppy is a classic example where modern day needs meet natural medicine. Morphine, a type of extracted component of poppy straw, brings massive relief too many who are suffering chronic pain.

The extensive history of herbal medicine almost goes beyond time and even though modern day medicine rests a great deal of its foundations against it a divide has unfortunately grown between natural therapies and ‘modern day’ drugs. Herbal medicine is often referred to as ‘experimental’ yet there are centuries of knowledge and practice that cannot be ignored.

Now drug companies have the basis of herbal properties extracted and synthesized for drug production they are quick to, at best, give no credit or, at worst, discredit herbal medicine. This unfortunate, often profit driven stance has named herbal medicine as unscientific and charlatan medicine. From whence it came; the mainstream practice of medicine over all of time; herbal medicine is now considered unconventional.

History doesn’t lie and although it will take time, modern day man will discover that modern day medicine isn’t the only option and most certainly at times isn’t the best option to cure all ills.
